Oh Frabjous Day!
Jun. 24th, 2005 11:28 amSo, according to That Scientist Bloke who told us what day in Jan. was the most miserable of the year, today is the Happiest Day. So are you all Happy? Science says you are!
(heard it on the radio this morning, can't find a link yet).
Sadly, my immediate outpouring of happiness at hearing this was somewhat tempered by it having been preceeded by this story - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4618125.stm - the IRA finally admitting to having shot a 14yr girl 30 years ago then blaming it on the soldiers they were actually shooting at. Later they also claimed to have shot the soldier 'responsible'.
Very few people ever believed this and now, for some reason they've finally owned up. Which is, in a sad and somewhat twisted way, a good thing.
What's depressing is that I have no doubt whatsoever that the apologists and blinded bigots out there are probably already full of excuses and some of them will actually BELIEVE that this child was a casualty of war and it's all the Brits fault for being there in the first place, not that of the Noble Republican Brotherhood.
And of course if Mr Scientist believes June and July are the Happy Months, he is very obviously not from here. Riot season seems to be about to take off in style, with one of the big contentious marches tomorrow. They've been rerouted so they're not happy and thus will have their hordes of drunken be-tracksuited followers along to show their Displeasure. I have once more no doubt that the locals will, in turn, go out of their way to manage to be Offended and Repressed by it all so they can excuse their behaviour afterwards.

My favourite bit from this story is the SF councillor saying that "... what residents will be doing is trying to maintain calm." . Trying? How about just, you know, NOT rioting?
Stay at home, go out for the day, ignore the silly men in hats and sashes. Yes, the drums are very noisy, but you have thousands of pounds worth of stereo equipment in your souped-up spidey cars, just turn it on and whack up the bass.
They'll soon give up if you don't pay them any attention you know, you're only encouraging them!
Although, to be fair, the last few years have been much much quieter and barely a word is ever heard about Drumcree these days, so things ARE improving. Slowly, but hopefully surely.
Hmm. Having vented some spleen, I do feel somewhat happier. It is Friday and also payday, which are both Very Good Things. Perhaps the day just got off to a bad start with the presentation of yet another slightly chewed and (thankfully) deceased display of affection from the cats.
Tho I am finding them much easier to deal with, getting increasingly unfazed with each successive discovery of dead rodent. Perhaps this is a form of feline Tough Love to rid me of my mousephobia.
Or maybe they are just toying with me, playing mind games to drive me mad and they really are just twisted, vicious slaughtering machines wrapped up in a cute fluffy package.
A cat in ... cat's clothing :p
