Sep. 27th, 2005 10:44 amWe are, apparently, having a Momentous and Historic Day here. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4283242.stm
Yep, another one. Woohoo.
Half the papers are all 'HURRAH OMG BEST THING EVER' and the other half are all 'BOO BAH HUMBUG'.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4285432.stm
To sum up, one side have finally gotten round to doing what they promised years ago, having tried to get out of doing ever since and are now expecting gold stars, pats on the back, cheers and government.
The other side are all 'no way you CHEATED, I'm TELLING, liar liar pants on fire!' and jumping up and down ranting and insisting it means NOTHING because if it did they might actually have to do something about it and change.
(ira have decommissioned arms [1], unionists aren't exactly thrilled and don't believe them).
I can understand scepticism, I'm not exactly out looking for a crossroads to dance at myself, but some of the reactions - particularly Paisley's - smack more of panic to me that the big hurdle they put up, thinking it'd never be crossed, HAS been crossed and now what the hell do they do?
Here's a suggestion. Instead of screaming its ALL LIES, why not go and do your JOB and start representing the people you're supposed to represent. You know, the ones with the rioting and the burning and the road blocking and the oh yes, paramilitary weapons fired at police. Not much of a mention of THEM being decommissioned from Dr.[2] Paisley et al
Sorry, there is a mention -
One loyalist spokesman said loyalist paramilitaries would not be following the IRA's decommissioning move. Sammy Duddy, a member of the Ulster Political Research Group - which advises the UDA, said: "The general has no chance of seeing that achieved. Should he live to be 208, he'll never see it."

So yeah. Woohoo.
IAN Another mouse this morning. Again, thankfully already dead, but really, if i wanted to start the day moving corpses about I'd have been an archaeologist or something. Oh wait...
