I seem to remember picking it up from the very shop named in the introduction (ooer, SPOOKY!) at the same time as I bought "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell". The latter I never managed to read, and is now in the box of Stuff that's been waiting to go to the charity shop since August.
I am somewhat miffed, though. My OCD book collecting nature has been thwarted by the fact that I missed "The Devil in Amber" until it was only available in paperback.
