Are you allowed to BURNINATE hospitals?? Well. Not so much the hospital as the STUPID FUCKING CONSULTANT who, after whisking mum in on TWELVE HOURS notice and saying the op would be this friday, swanned in this morning to say he'd FORGOTTEN he already HAD an op to do on friday so it'd probably be next week sometime and she can go home.

He FORGOT he already had an operation scheduled. FORGOT.

So now we are in minor panic mode as to
a. how to GET mum home - I am not sure she and the neck brace will fit in my car, my sister can't pick her up today because she'd have to bring the baby and thus have even less room and my brother's car is a work one and thus manky and full of tools.
b. she needs a fair bit of care at home and we have no idea if they can sort that by this afternoon
c. even I would have trouble sorting out the time off work, someone to feed the cats and someone to sort out the horse on FOUR HOURS NOTICE. ffs.

They are awaiting to get the physio, OT and social worker to assess her and the SW will apparently be sorting out what care she needs at home and *if* they get that sorted she could be going home today. Maybe. OR, maybe not. Who knows??
I had to apologise to the nurse who was v. nice and I was... possibly not so nice. It's not her fault after all.

Not to mention of course the huge amount of extra stress this will be piling on Mum. Just what she needs right now, eh?

That fucking consultant tho. JESUS. HE FORGOT.
Right. better actually go to work, since may have to have lots of time off now at v. short notice...

Is there any form of complaints procedure? A long and burninating letter may need to be written.

Sadly, if doctors are gods to lesser mortals, then consultants are gods to doctors.

A strongly-worded formal complaint is definitely the way to go here. If he had to postpone your mother's operation because of an incoming emergency, then fair enough. To do so because of not bother to check his calendar? NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Also, if you want to stay on side with the nurses, a big tin of Roses generally does the trick.

FORGOT? Sorry, what?

I'd make a complaint if I were you.

What a tosser. Talk to the local PALs office and put in a formal complaint. You should be asking for compensation there. That is utterly outrageous.

This may not be what you want to hear ... and I'm not sure what kind of person a consultant is, in the medical profession ...

...But I read an article recently about some people in the US tentatively proposing that maybe perhaps they should limit doctors to 80 hour weeks, instead of the 100-120 hour weeks they often work. And I thought to myself that mistakes must be rampant, and it's a wonder I don't see _more_ stories about people getting the wrong organs removed and things like that.

I don't know what things are like in NI. I guess they're not as bad ('cause the US is generally insane), but still pretty bad.

So I have a lot of sympathy for you, but I also have a lot of sympathy for doctors and nurses, who work long hours doing icky jobs in stressful conditions.

(on my recent interaction with the hospital here, every time I went to talk to a different person, they asked me my date of birth. It was pretty clear that that was a check to make sure they're xraying/etc the right person..)

DESTROY AND BURN via a complaint. Seriously, that's not good enough. Of course your mum mightn't want a complaint made at the mo, and I would understand that, in which case just make with the TROGDORR
