That's a long old commute - I'd definitely say try the train. I did most of my degree reading somewhere between Brighton and Eastbourne; papers on cognitive psychology these days give me flashbacks to Lewes station :)
I'm not the best for music recommendations as I tend to listen to film sountracks when I'm writing, and they make for rubbish driving music. (28 Days Later is my current favourite. Creepy.)
Hope the course goes well - and you'll find that essay writing comes flooding back. Happily, nothing ever seems to change about how to write a good one.
