80s is totally fine - I have Absolute 80s on in the house quite a lot, since I discovered I can get it thro the telly ;p Tho it might get distracting for study as it can lead to leppin' round the living room like an eejit!
Music for study would be excellent, complete silence can be as distracting as the radio or telly.
