It's a series by Joss Whedon which is basically the Wild West in Space, (settlers sent out to populate planets way way out from the main hub of civilisation) complete with horses, pistols and swearing in Mandarin. Our Heros fly about between the planets in a Firefly spaceship (hence the name) doing a bit of smuggling, thieving, and having Assorted Adventures and it's compulsive viewing. Very strong characters, great dialogue, very atmospheric and with amazing amount of detail put into creating the world it's set in. Fox cancelled it after the first series, leaving many many unanswered questions which the movie will hopefully address (eg who the hell IS book?).
