I'm great at giving compliments, and generally manage to run myself down yet more in the process (You're a coding whizz, I'd NEVER have been able to do that myself!)
I do get your point about not bragging about salaries or other prowess, but I'm not even talking about saying 'I'm better that you' just 'I can do this and do it well.' But yes a lot of it is to do with not wanting to make other people uncomfortable. And it's interesting to see it from a male persepective too, since it has the same results as from the female, but for very different reasons.
