Browsing thro Amazon at lunchtime, I was going thro the 'recommendations' bit, mostly weeding out books I already have which they persist in still recommending. With some tho I was having trouble remembering whether or not I actually did own them, or even if I had ever read them (eg some of the later endless series of Krondor ones).

Also I have wanted for a long long time to get some sort of catalogue of all the books together, so the question! Does anyone here use/know of any kind of intarnet or downloadable cataloguing thing?
I've heard of a couple, but the only one I could remember the name of was Bookcrossing, which is more of a list of ones you've gotten rid of - tho may do that too, as I have at least 2 copies of some.

Mind you I have no idea when I'd find TIME to do it, but a few every night (or while at work, hence online version ;p) should get somewhere at least. It'd be nice to get some idea of what I have and possibly even stop me from adding even more for a while ;p

Every single one seems to be for cataloguing actual libraries, and costs money.

This is free, don't know if it's any good:

RE; the later Krondor books - if you don't have em, don't get em, they're total poo, I reckon!

it does cost some money, but when i get home i'll find the site for the thing i really liked the trial version of (but, yes, have never gotten round to actually buying). i have this great fear that if the house burnt down i'd never convince the insurnace to replace my lovely books unless i have a list...

That looks interesting, poking about on google has turned up http://www.bibliophil.org and http://www.librarything.com, which also look like they might do it.

More Poking to be done!

LibraryThing! (It's down at the moment, but when it's up it's really good!) It even has its own livejournal community, [livejournal.com profile] librarything.

this is also a great fear of mine, I have so many, it would be bloody hard to produce a list after they'd all GONE

gnah, the very thought of it!

Ah so that's why I couldn't get at it! That's the one I think i'd heard of before but couldn't remember the name of.

So it's good then?

Yeah I've read a couple of them, but I can't remember off the top of my head which ones, they all kinda merge...

It's very good! [livejournal.com profile] mirrorshard uses it too. I'm not using it for all my books, just for the cookery ones.

And I only catalogued my nonfiction books, on the basis that there were ridiculousmany of the others. It is, indeed, very good.

http://www.librarything.com/catalog/ravenmagic is mine, so you can look through the results once it's back up.

I've got a few of the Collectorz bits - books, music and movies. Although so far only the movie one has much in it.

It works for me, and makes flashy little catalogues like these.

That looks pretty funky too ;) Now all I need is a spare week or so to do the books, then I can do the filmz!

aha, that's exactly what i was talking about: if you go here you can get the free trial version (a paltry 100 books, pah!) but the whole thing is only €39.50.

Or you can go really nuts, and get a little barcode scanner for whipping through your books and adding them all in one go :P

The wossname tyrell linked to is a v. basic thing, but does much the same without the pretty pictuers and is free ;)

If these are your books you have at home, then I'm not doing it. At the last count we had something like 1,200 or something insane. Life's too short!

i get the sweat of fear about that - because, after all, it'd be almost fun to go and buy new clothes. the only non-book things i'd be crazed about losing are old photographs and letters and (i am so sad) the contents of my hard-drive.

but, gnn, to replace books i've had since i was a wee thing? that'd be HARD.

Losing photos would be a total disaster. And of course since these days most of them are on the hard drive, can't afford to lose that either! ANd letters?

And the BOOKS?? *curls up in a corner and cries*
