Well I guess the shock car ads (seatbelts etc) work, so maybe these do too.. but the whole trend to emotional blackmail ads is getting a bit much (bloody rspca).

I don't feel the emotional blackmail is effective, at least for stopping people starting. For those who want to stop smoking it probably is effective, to a degree - there's definitely some motivation there. Still, I (probably because of my parents necessity to switch over whenever a smoking advert is on) always find these very unfair on non-smokers. The imagery is unpleasant, even more so to those who have lost friends or family.

The RSPCA/etc ones really get me though, as they're deliberately targeting the emotionally vunerable. Given the time these are shown (Countdown), and the other ads on at the same time (stana stair lifts, dentafix, etc), I'd say they're almost certainly being targetted at the elderly which seems particularily evil.
