For [livejournal.com profile] thesme_01 mostly, and also to get it out of my head!
Written many many years ago, as a protest when the remains of the Viking Settlement at Wood Quay were about to be bulldozed by Dublin Corporation to build themselves shiny new offices...
Sadly it didn't quite work and the offices are now there and Viking Dublin isn't so much.

(to the tune of, not surprisingly, Abide With Me)

Abide Wood Quay, fast falls the Liffeyside
Dublin decreases, Lord Wood Quay abide.
Wne all our efforts fail - to vandal's glee
F.X. perplexes them; abide Wood Quay

Once longships came and Vikings did reside -
Gaels claimed and tamed them, Normans occupied:
Let not our cradle vanish by decrees -
While we are able, we'll abide Wood Quay.

Swift to bolldoze appears the Corpo's way;
Naught is disclosed, for all that Noel may say!
Still stands the view of Christ Churst from Northside -
We're going to keep it too! Wood Quay abide.

I've heard it said - in Cork and in Belfast,
Dublin is dead - a desert bleak and vast;
Let those prognoses wither in mid-stride,
Belton relent on this; Wood Quay abide!

Foes we shan't fear - Augustine is our guide -
Though Corkmen sneer and charlatans deride.
Pearse, how are you Wyse? Show Lynch some mastery -
End thy consent and then abide Wood Quay.

Reminds me of Viking Holiday... as taught to me by a bunch of Vikings (http://archaeolink.fotopic.net/p19373680.html)last summer (we were drunk of course, so I don't remember the words...)

We're all going on a Viking Holiday,
Rape and Pillage for a week or two!

I have to say, I LOVE the 'let not our cradle vanish by decrees' line.
Particularly since it is STILL very relevant.

depressingly so, yes...
