Physio Round 2

Started second round of physio today, details below the cut for anyone not completely over teh whole leg thing
Brief background. Went to the GP about a month ago, cos ankle is still v. stiff and sore and I probably still shouldn't be using a crutch at this stage. He agreed and referred me to the physio. But they put me on the 'routine/chronic' waiting list, which is Four Months Long.
I didn't fancy waiting that long, so since they also do it privately, went for that. First session was today.
Surprise Surprise, they had no record at all of me being referred by GP. So that took some faffing while they got the clinic to fax thro the referral.
Then The Explaining Of It All, which took a while, during which I realised I hadn't brought the heel lift insole thingy. Bugger.
Anyway. Then, Examining. And Pondering. And teh conclusion -
It is A Very Stiff Ankle, and she thinks there might be some 'traumatic/secondary arthritis' or similar on the joint. So I'm going to go for 5 or 6 sessions there and if that doesn't make a noticable difference, she's sending me back to the fracture clinic, possibly for more surgery. YAY.
Then she did the Working To Loosen The Joint. Which was pretty much as painful as I had remembered (ie. clutching side of bed trying not to yelp). I had thought that part at least would be less OWOWOWOW STOP OW by now. Also, calf muscles on both legs are incredibly tender (ie sore to touch). It did move more by the time she'd finished tho.
After all this fun, she decided I should have been referred as Urgent, not Routine at all, so she's going to switch me back from Private to NHS, since apparently that's where I should have been in the first place. Yay! (i think).
Going back in about a week and a half (cos she's off next week), in the meantime have to do stretching exercises 5 times a day - pretty much the same exercises I had last time - some with added stretchy bands. Will see if it helps this time. Can't hurt anwyay.
Mention of more surgery was worrying, but it had been in the back of my head. Hopefully the physio stuff will help tho; it's also in some way a relief to know I was right to insist on more, and that they're going to try fixing it.
Overall, I THINK I feel better about it now ;p
In other news, still having fun with the wii fit. Haven't really lost much weight - tho it has dropped a little this week - but I have lost an inch from my waist and over an inch from hips/belleh (BYEBYE BELLEH) which I am much more pleased with, since there is obviously muscle toning/building going on. Plus I FEEL much better for doing some sort of exercise again at last.
Haven't been doing the balance games so much, mostly because I suck that them.
Most days I do about an hour - half an hour of a mix of the yoga and muscle exercises, in which I daily get told my left leg doesn't seem to offer as much support as my right. However in some of the yoga I have great balance and my form is beautiful too! Thanks George! (have taken to calling the instructor man George, as this helps when I need to yell at him ;p).
Then 20 mins/half an hour of the aerobic things. I still have to do the jogging in short bursts, as *both* legs start to give out if I try the longer one. Just about have the hang of the Step one, I rock the hula hoops (tho, knackering), and recently have been trying the 2nd level of the rhythm boxing programme. Which has mostly proved I have very little rhythm and no co-ordination ;p
So far, I've found it a good incentive to keep exercising - with the scoring you can see yourself getting better, and there is a quite a variety of exercises. It also suggests combinations of exercises that go well together. Some of them I still can't manage and the one legged ones are a Challenge, but it's all good practice.
What i don't like so much is the daily weighing, since weight can vary day to day anyway. And I think BMI is a pile of crock, especially as the wii fit does it, based only on height/weight - cf the losing inches but not actual weight. And i haven't bothered with the 'wii fit age' part in weeks. Tho I was down around 32 last time, so go me!
But, on the whole, for me, it's been a Win so far ;)
Right. Now I have to go wiggle my ankle 50 times. Then do some rapid cleaning before I head to work. Yay!

Date: 2008-05-22 11:17 am (UTC)I am pleased that physio is taking whole foot situation seriously. XRAY get XRAY so a) I can rub myself all over it and b) make sure nothing weird(er) is going in your depths.
Dr Thesme says so.

Date: 2008-05-22 11:56 am (UTC)But it is a relief (in a way) to have confirmation it really IS NOT RIGHT and I'm not just malingering or making it up ;p
I will ask about the xrays - it'd make sense anyway if she thinks it is some sort of arthritis causing it. I quite like the sound of TRAUMATIC ARTHRITIS. Nicely dramatic ;p

Date: 2008-05-22 12:26 pm (UTC)I have lost 3 pounds this week - but again, it's the swelling from being poorly again going - back in the new clothes i brought so happy :)
I try to do an hour a day on it sometimes give up after 45 mins or so!
I do think it's very good and a worthwhile investment, and if you do the wii sports (which I think you got with it?) the boxing on there kills you, but is easier than the rhythm boxing I find (if you want to go for arm tone).
I've got advanced/super advanced on most things by now - but I can't do the sodding lord of the dance thing and stuff at all - I worry as when I do some of the stuff my knees make loud noises of pain :P I asked the doctor about this - he says it may just be weight related (and perhaps posture because I walk funny when belly hurt)
I think the thing with it is, is so long as you have the will power to do the stuff then it will work - if you don't it's never going to, tis nice to be able to go hmm exercise and have it right there though :)
Glad to see physio is working itself out - I had thought if it was still sore there would be need for surgery - it may be that they've trapped something in it, or scar tissue is restricting it - something simple like that would be good!
WIll keep fingers crossed that more physio fixes it though :)

Date: 2008-05-22 12:35 pm (UTC)the lord of the dance i haven't even attemped yet! I have a feeling the ankle couldn't hold and i'd land on my face ;p
I must do the wii sports thing, haven't tried it much really since i got it.
Overall, it's definitely been a good investment for me - i certainly wouldn't be doing an hour an night of any kind of exercise with out it ;p
Hopefully the physio will work things out, but if not, surgery isn't my most favourite thing but if it helps, then at least there's something they can do!

Date: 2008-05-22 04:03 pm (UTC)It was good to get confirmation and not be treated like it was all in my head or it'd just go away in a bit! hopefully it won't need surgery, but even if it does, it's better than hobbling about for ever!

Date: 2008-05-22 07:10 pm (UTC)Glad to hear the wii fit is working out well. I'm getting very tempted myself, but I think I should wait till the I can use it in the new house, as I have crammed the sitting room here full of junk, so I wouldn't be able to use it anyway :-)
BTW, how much space to you need? Depending on how much you move, I'm not sure I could use it here even if I tidied up. I can use a dance mat, but if you stretch out a lot from the platform, it wouldn't be possible.

Date: 2008-05-23 06:51 am (UTC)Yay for physio lady being all serious about it though, but BOOH for having to go privately for them to find out that you shouldn't have to.
