What does it mean to master a skill?

On Discworld, it just means "To get as much as your guild will teach you." If you're, say, a witch, you get up to something like 10 levels of fighting skills, but up to 300 of a variety of magic skills. The ones you can get up to 300 in are your "primary" skills - they sort of define the theme of your guild abilities, although you can be a fighter who casts spells from scrolls, or a witch who jabs people with vicious hairpins, or a priest who tries to hide in the shadows like a thief (feef) or assassin (sasswot).

Once you've mastered a skill, you have to either teach it to yourself (very expensive in experience points) or find someone better than you to teach you (not quite as expensive in experience points). Prior to mastering a skill, your guild will teach it you for money and experience points, which is overall much easier.

Said much better than I could of! But mostly posted that because now i have finally mastered (or guild maxxed) all teh magic skills. What one *does* with 300 levels of ring, I'm not sure, but it looks good ;p

I remember several very long conversations with Woom and others, trying to brainstorm for anything useful ring could do for witches. Making or repairing other rings would seem to override people like the Silver Star, and trying to find something headological that was useful didn't fly very well etc. The best that anyone could really suggest at the time was rings that used a ring check when you used them, that was hard (so you needed mad sk1llz), but which suited witches for some reason. And, uh, yeah. That was about it.

Yeah, I remember having similar discussions with Tilly a long long time ago, and the problem is that ring just doesn't fit with witch magic, as far as we could see. There's very little in disc-style you could apply it to.

Summoning would make a *much* better witch primary, or even earth, which oddly is more used in wizardry than witching despite the 'magic out of the ground, not the sky' thing.

I'm not sure why it was ever made a witch primary. Hmm. Maybe Gruper might know, since he seems to be Back now.

I imagine that, once people realized ring was poo, there was a reticence to change the primaries because that would give witches 3 of the 5 needed for DKDD, and I have vague memories that people hated the time when witches were better at casting DKDD than the whinging bags of flesh and frocks.

Well, obviously we can't go round upsetting the fatboys, the sheer weight of the whines could crash the disc...

But having summoning, or enchanting, or even one of the elementals would seem to make so much more *sense*, rather than one that is never used at all. Of course expecting sense is silly anyway ;p
