Ahh the lovely girls!

hellisonoops, internet problems for a bit there but it came back!
So it is Lovely Girls night, or, The Rose of Tralee, which is... not quite a beauty contest. According to the official line it is 'a celebration of Irishness'. What it is mostly is a lot of cheesy fun in big frocks that nobody really seems to take very seriously. All the girls have some irish connection and come out in their Posh Frock and LOVELY Newbridge Silver Jewellery (so shiny), have a chat with the host, Ray, and then do a wee turn - sing, say a pome, or (best of all) kick of their shoes and do jig. The winner gets some lovely shiny things and goes off travelling the world for a year being some sort of Tourist Ambassador for Ireland.
They do a live webcast of it here if anyone wants to join in the fun!
Missed the start (woes! hopefully didn't miss any dances), tho came in at Rose 5 (dubai) who was having a great chat with Ray about how to pronounce 'donkey'. Then she sang a song, not badly given she's up on a stage in front of several thousand people, most of her family and half the country.
Rose 6 is Toronto and her mother was also once Toronto rose! and met her da while over for the festival. Awww. Fairly typical so far. But then, for her 'party piece', she brings out a SNAKE. A Boa Constrictor. Chats away while it wraps itself round her posh frock, then drapes it over a *very* nervous looking Ray. You don't get that on Miss World!
News is on now, so have stocked up on popcorn and juice and am all settled to watch the second half of tonight's show, which should be starting soon! Hurrah!
Was trying to find a clip from last year of Ray doing a cartwheel across the stage, but alas, can't track one down. Maybe he'll do it again this year ;p

Rose 7, Sligo! And they are talking about... her address. Which is confusing some how. I want her necklace too. may have to do some drooling at the newbridge website after this! 9 - cavan! IN pink, bright bright pink. Tho.. necklace. Must Stay Away From Newbridge Website. Must Stay Awaaaaay. SHE LIKES NUMBERS! hehe, looking for a thesis extension cos it's due in monday ;p Also a huge steve jobs fan apparently

Rose 10, Germany. Another gorgeous necklace (am not obsessed at all) she... didn't realise it was on tv? heh. A midwife. Good call German Rose, they'll like that. She reminds me of my favourite rose ever, a belgian girl who had learnt her english from her ulster granny so spoke with a bizarre belgian/broad rural antrim accent. Hilarious ;p ROFL she has a hairy da! Aha she is going to make Ray sing the Hat Song. With actions! hee, they're all doing the actions. bah clarinet WHERE ARE THE DANCERS?? I like her tho ;p She is moving into favourite along with Snakes on a Rose earlier.
Ad break! So far, rooting for Rose 6 and 10. But there are PLENTY more to go...
11 - philadelphia. And an opera singer. I suspect we won't be getting any dancing with this one either :/ "this may sound like another stupid question"... they're all Stupid ray. ALL OF THEM. That is a very very sparkly dress. And opera. That is some voice.
12 - ARMAGH - and while I am on the phone to a friend from armagh too, so we are cheering her! Hmm, no party piece, that's no fun!
13 - derby rose. Already giving out to Ray, good on you. *born* in 1990. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? Damnit. Done voluntry work abroad, that'll get her points. Tho i guess it means shes already done the 'travel and help children' part then ;p

Cos it's not like she's going to say it's shite really... and a social worker for kids. Points! Woo. her aunt was NZ rose and she wearing the same dress? they couldn't get a new one?

While most of teh girls are normal to slightly over average size (and by that I mean everyday average, not 'beauty show' average - 12s, 14s, not 6s), Cork here is A good bit over. and looks Gorgeous. Stunning even! YAY CORK! hee sent her escort off for cough medicine and he asked the chemist for a diaphragm? Excellent ;p
