I had a plan for today. It was a simple plan. It started with horse then work, then hosptial visiting. What was supposed to happen was -
9ish get to stables, get horse shod
10ish post shoeing, get horse clipped
lunchtime put horse in field (with rug), go to work
5ish leave work, have food
6ish go to hospital visit mother
8ish either back to stables, bring horse in OR leave horse out, sofa
9ish CIDER

Then, got call from yard manager to say clipping lady couldn't come til 12 and could I get sedative from vets. Still, I figured, we'd be done clipping half one ish plan would still work

What Actually Happened -

9ish get to stables, chat to Farrier and Mary's Owner as Mary (another horse) is shod
9.30ish farrier starts shoeing ziggy, decide to try hot shoeing. This goes well!

Oh and another part of the plan had been Take Proper Photos. Did remember camera, forgot to charge camera battery so only had phone camera. On which I kept pressing the wrong button so only got one crappy shot of the hot shoeing, not several of billowing smoke, detail, etc.

10.45, shoeing done. Put horse in stable with food, drive to nearby town to purchage sedative gel and stuff for lunch

11.30 back at stables, administer half of tube of sedative to horse (this is Not As Easy As It Sounds, but despite horse being v. big, tall, and weighing c.a ton, still easier than dosing cats).
Then, make VERY FOOLISH decision to put horse out in outdoor arena to have a stretch, while I clean out stable

11.45 (remember, clipping lady coming at 12) go to get horse. Find previously almost white horse now black. BLACK ALL OVER WITH WET MUD. Oh dear. (can't clip horses while covered in wet mud). Panic a bit.

12 clipping lady arrives. Stares in shock at (seriously) dirtiest horse either of us have ever seen. Goes to have lunch while I set about horse, rubbing vigorously with straw

12.30 worse of mud off, figure that since horse already doped, we'll at manage a trace or at very least a bib clip, either of which will reduce the problem of v. hairy horse getting sweaty round girth area.

12.45 discover blades of yard clippers blunt. Both sets. Yard owner reluctant to let us use good set, as the best way to blunt a fresh set of blades is to try clip a wet, muddy horse. Now have doped horse with one shaved shoulder. Decide 'fuck it' i will go buy blades, need feed anyway, also this will give wet muddy horse time to dry

1. put horse back in stable, set off for saddlery on other side of lisburn
1.30 arrive at saddlery, they have blades! yay! also food. Yay! purchase items, head back.
2ish, back. Clipping lady now clipping a dog (she has dog clipping business in the yard). Put friend's horse out in field, have lunch
3.ish brush now mostly dry mud off horse. Read paper

3.30 clipping lady done with dog! also, has somehow got sharp blades of yard owner. So i didn't need to spend FORTY QUID on new ones. Still, handy to have. Clipping commences.

4. clipping mostly going well. Tho, despite sedative, horse still not happy with clippers any where near head. Administer more sedative. This takes a while, as horse now suspicious (it is a gel in a syringe you stick in horse's mouth; horse now not wanting us anywhere near her head), but eventually we manage.

4.20 still clipping, horse still not liking clippers near head. Even with sedative, getting stressed and Upset. A ton of metal-shod upset. Give in and borrow twitch (these look horrible, but are actually v. humane way of controlling horse - pinching the upper lip releases endorphins and horse literally spaces out and practically falls asleep).
Attempt to apply twitch. Horse still having none of us near face in case there is more sedative and/or clippers. Clipping lady tries too, but both fail, mainly because she is shorter than me and horse can stick her nose about 7ft in air. And is strong.
Luckily, local horse vet is to hand! local horse vet is 6ft4 and Big. And has own version of 'horseman's word' (ie grabbing firmly by the ear). Vet applies twitch. Says this approach also works on teh ladies. Hmm.

4.30 twitch on, horse blissed out (srsly, it is v. bizarre, but it works) , clipping re-commences!

4.45 clipping finished! Have lovely full clip (all coat off except most of face and legs). Strokey strokey. There is NOTHING absolutely NOTHING to compare with the feel of a freshly clipped horse (unless youve had a cat/dog shaved for an op, that is close). So so smooth and... strokable. Could stroke all day. Horse now looks like this!

See the front leg there? The top of it? How black it is? At 11.45, teh ENTIRE HORSE was that colour. With wet, sticky mud. Am amazed we got her clipped at all.

5ish put v. sleepy horse back in stable. Go to get rug. Realise have left stable rug at home. D'oh. Put outdoor rug on horse. Make up feeds, feed horse. Realise standing all day plus lugging bags of feed around making ankle Unhappy

5.30. leave stables, finally! Hurrah!

6 home. Change (so covered in hair), wash. Toast and tea. Daft telly (old ANTM. I am powerless in the face of modelling world idiocy). Get up. well. Try to get up. Ankle OUCH. OWOWOW. Hobble to kitchen, find neurofen.

7. hospital. Mother doing a bit better. In fact well enough to note limping. Assure mother all is fine, limp to talk to nurses, limp back, sit for a while. Phone/txt various family members to update.

9ish hobble out of hospital. Get in car going 'ouch this is quite painful now!'
9.30. home, make popcorn, get katy. Drink katy with feet up

... later? Katy empty! Need more katy! Try to get off sofa. OW OW BLOODY HELL OW. edge towards fridge by hopping along worktops. Find more painkillers. Drink more katy.

Later still - BLOODY CAT KNOCKS BLOODY KATY OVER. Need more. Try to get up. Oh Buggery fuck. Remeber crutches stashed behind sofa. Get one (am NOT going back to two. Fuck you ankle you can't make me!), hobble to kitchen. Get 2 katys, to be safe.

Now! Wtf how is it nearly 3?? WHAT? anyway. 4th katy nearly done. Possibly also time for MOAR CODINE so i can actually make it as far as the stairs then bed. Lovely lovely bed.

Tomorrow, I suspect will involve Sleep, hot bath, and MOAR CODINE. And bringing stable rug to horse (tho, if weather still mild, may just leave her out, go up sunday) and, obv,. hospital. Mostly, sleeping.
And, hmm. Also hoping anyone at work i told 'will be in friday afternoon' either didn't need anything today, or didn't notice. Ah well.

how has your weekend started off?

how has your weekend started off?

Better than yours!

Worked, finished work, brane eating (last session. Possibly for ever. Feel scared abut this), hairdresser to get hair cut and straightened, home, bed, A&B's for dinner (A cooked *shudders*), home, bed, sleep.

Am up now cos had to drop Dave's car to the garage.

I like the sound of this vet btw. Shall we tag him for the cave?

I really misread that one:

"What was supposed to happen was -
9ish get to stables, get horse shot"
