Chief of those today being NEVER EVER volunteer to babysit on Easter Sunday. Tho we did all survive and no chocolate was eaten from about 4pm onwards, which I felt was a win. And I think they may all finally be asleep! HURRAH!

Otherwise, Easter is going well! Work friday (boo!), tho escaped early (yay!), got horses sorted as quickly as possible then collapsed on sofa with migraleve. Yay also for codine!

Saturday - up early for morning hack. I think I was out of bed earlier than I usually would be for work ;p Had a lovely potter around back roads on the horses, home for lunchtime and spent then next couple of hours sat on the patio in the sun reading as virgin seem to have switched off the internet again . Back to move horses around about 3ish then off to shop for b'day presents for nephew and anything that might keep the other 2 amused and (preferably) quiet ;p
Took an odd notion to use up leftover soda bread flour from pancakes, so also went to lakeland and bought scales, a bread tin, yeast stuff and crumpet rings (possibly being over ambitious here, seeing as I have never baked a single thing successfully before). home via tesco for buttermilk etc and got in just in time for Dr Who!

May have to watch that again to catch everything, but a damn fine opener to the new series.

After Dr Who, internet was still off, so the BAKING commenced. Well, the covering of kitchen with flour... made a fruit soda dough & put that in the oven. Crumpet rings had a recipe for, well, crumpets, so made stuff for that. It was *supposed* to be batter, but ... Stuff is more appropriate. Then the quick yeast i got for the crumpets had a 'quick bread' recipe , so i figured, what the hell! and made that dough too. Shuffled around waiting for soda bread to cook and it was, miraculously, EDIBLE! I BAKED A THING THAT WAS EDIBLE!
Then remembered horses still out, went and got them in while soda bread cooled and other... stuff Rose, or whatever is is yeasty dough does.
Came back, put quick bread in oven, peered suspiciously at Crumpet Stuff. It *had* risen, but did not look like batter. Instructions said to 'pour into a jug' but this was definitely NOT pourable. More... stickable. very Very stickable. To everything. Still, nothing ventured, etc, so *tried* putting some in crumpet rings and seeing if it would cook, but alas, all i made were sort of half cooked doughy, lumpy biscuits. And the Stuff KEPT RISING.
So i made some pimms and ate the soda bread and non soda bread instead (also turned out edible! am still in shock). The Stuff still in the kitchen tho. I hope it doesn't eat one of the cats while i'm away...

Today, lie in, more reading (the Crimson Petal and the White), then down here to babysit. Afternoon spent chasing chocolate fuelled toddler round and round and round the garden, then marshalling all 3 for dinner at the mothers, then back to their own place to build lego and chase toddler round the garden some more (not as a game at this point, he got out while I was sorting lego and I genuinely couldn't catch him ;p). Finally however, some sort of lego star wars ship was assembled and all 3 packed off to bed.
So now, chocolate and more reading for me! and Two more days off work! hurrah!
happy easter ;)

drop scones = pancakes yes? (i'll have no truck with this crepe nonsense).
Those i can make, and do on pancake tuesday, thus having a big bag of left over soda-bread flour (as obv. the ONLY true way to make them is with sodabread flour and buttermilk) to use up. Was v. impressed I actually managed to bake edible soda bread loaf - I'd love to try farls but don't have the required really thick pan/griddle to do them on.

The chocolate fuelled part didn't occur to me when I agreed (AGES AGO) to do this, and by the time it had, it was too late to back out!

yep, the really, really fat ones. yum. (though i've never made them with soda flour OR buttermilk - is that wrong?)

i am also impressed! what next, flowery aprons? joining the WI?

aha - that sounds like a cunning relative was planning ahead...

I think the general rule is normal flour + normal milk or sodabread flour + buttermilk. You should try them like that sometime. The are VERY nomsome. NOMNOMNOM

I made Many on pancake tuesday then realised i had to eat them all myself. I don't think i was hungry again for about 2 days...

I have crumpet rings and have yet to master crumpets - they're more difficult than the hairy bakers had me believe. :(

yes, the living alone + baking issue does tend to lead to the odd attack of overconsumption. i rationalise it by hearing my mother when i was 10 speaking to me: "children are STARVING in [INSERT COUNTRY MOST RECENTLY ON TV BECAUSE OF FAMINE] and you are going to WASTE FOOD?" then i have to lie down for a while because of tasty carbohydate coma.

I ended up a bit like that yesterday evening when i suddenly realised I had not one but TWO edible loaves of slightly different types of bread ;p

such tasty and VIRTUOUS toast this morning tho (it is totally more virtuous if you made it yourself, surely?)

Haven't seen adaptation, as it is on at the same time as Castle, plus I wanted to read the book first, might see if they have it all on iplayer over the weekend tho
