Music for my ears, pls!

Have survived first week of uni! It's gone well so far, am mostly scared now by the thought of writing an essay for the first time in Manymany years. It'll be fine tho. FINE.

The main problem this week has actually been the distance - the uni is 60 miles away and driving up/staring at screens/driving back is leaving me knackered - possibly due to being out of practice at concentrating that much, so I'm sure it'll get better. Going to try the train next week and see how that goes (less concentrating but earlier start and later back...).

Either way what I really need is Music. An hour and half in the car or a couple of hours on the train is a loooong trip to be stuck with crappy radio and the same cds I've had for years. I may even finally invest in an mp3 player!

So, suggestions please ! Music for drivng. music for train, music for studying to... what works for you? Ooh or podcasts! Give me SOUNDS!

ETA on a similar note, what's a good music player wossname these days? Does it have to be ipod?

That's a long old commute - I'd definitely say try the train. I did most of my degree reading somewhere between Brighton and Eastbourne; papers on cognitive psychology these days give me flashbacks to Lewes station :)

I'm not the best for music recommendations as I tend to listen to film sountracks when I'm writing, and they make for rubbish driving music. (28 Days Later is my current favourite. Creepy.)

Hope the course goes well - and you'll find that essay writing comes flooding back. Happily, nothing ever seems to change about how to write a good one.

The train could definitely be the way to go, I'll see how the timings work out, it'd be a good time to get some reading done too!

Ooh soundtracks, that's a good idea! The radio isn't so bad for travelling but when I'm working I find it very distracting, especially when writing/typing, I have in the past ended up writing down what the dj was saying on some kind of auto pilot!

I know what you mean - I usually have Radio 4 on somewhere in the house, but it's too distracting for working to. Especially Any Answers, I tend to get all shouty and that's not good for creativity!

Music - I'm sure I'm not the best person to ask. My head is still in the 1980s. Though I quite like dubstep...

Podcasts - I like Dave Gorman and Frank Skinner on Absolute, though I keep forgetting to listen. Ricky Gervais's old XFM shows are fucking hilarious, mainly due to Karl Pilkington, who started off as the show's producer but when Ricky and Stephen Merchant started talking to him they discovered he's a comedy genius (mainly because he's a bit thick). I have them saved somewhere I think, I can dig them out for you. I know Gervais is a bit Marmite though, you either love him or hate him. The Adam & Joe Show on BBC6 Music was ace, it's finished but you might be able to get some of them somewhere.

I posted on the Loos looking for podcat requests, I'll see if I can find that post...

Music for study - I have loads and I can share it with you. Some binaural stuff that's good for concentration. I'll sort them out for you later on today!

80s is totally fine - I have Absolute 80s on in the house quite a lot, since I discovered I can get it thro the telly ;p Tho it might get distracting for study as it can lead to leppin' round the living room like an eejit!

Music for study would be excellent, complete silence can be as distracting as the radio or telly.

This may or may not have happened the other week when I was alone in the gaff "studying"...

Are you not in that super-keen phase at the moment where you READ ALL THE THINGS?

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2011-09-30 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I have all the articles for first essay printed out! Starting reading them seems to be a harder step. However have had breakfast and done varioius emailing things, so have to start now!

I've listened to an awful lot of Enya while studying or working...

Video game soundtracks too :-)

For an mp3 player to use in the car, the most important thing is that there's no faffing about while driving.

My car radio doesn't take external input, so I have one of those fm transmitter things. But I haven't found a spot on the dial that's free the whole way, so when coming from Dublin I'm listening to the radio part way, then trying to turn on the mp3 player and get it playing by touch when Phantom cuts out. If you end up in the same position, the last thing you'll want is a touch screen.

Music for driving? Mostly bouncy stuff to keep me awake. Like... Biffy, or Florence or something like that.
For train? Low key stuff to send me off to sleep.
For study? Classical - really helps me concentrate.

I use an ipod touch because I got one for my birthday years ago
