May. 4th, 2005 02:51 pmElection day's a comin'!
Still not *fully* decided who to vote for. I am TORN. I have the wonderful choice between Ulster Unionists, SDLP, Sinn Fein, Alliance and DUP.

Obviously the shinners and dup are out from the start.
There's not a lot of point in voting SDLP in my constituency because they never do well there - it's a mainly Protestant/Unionist area and what Catholic/Nationalist vote there is is in West Belfast, which is the main SF stronghold.
Alliance (pretty much our Lib Dem equivalent, I think they are linked) generally do quite well, but up until now its been a safe UU seat. Until last time when the oily devious little shit Donaldson hung on in the UU to get the seat then once elected promptly defected to the DUP. So now there is some doubt as to whether people will stick with the UU and their new candidate whom no-one has ever heard of, or go with the (horrifying) general swing to the DUP and re-elect Donaldson.
So here is my problem. I really very much don't want the DUP and specifically Donaldson back in there. Which raises the question of do I go for tactcial vote and (every Tribal Voting fibre of my body shudders to write it) vote Ulster Unionist. In UK terms, that's pretty much voting Tory to keep UKIP out. Lesser of two evils and all that. Or do I sod it and vote Alliance? I am not sure at all. I shall have to do some reading tonight.
Thankfully the local govt. elections are PR so its doesn't have to be such a black and white choice, apart from the dilemna of do I put the shinners or donaldson last on the list. There's been very little info thro the door about the local elections, I think they assume people will just vote tribally as always and you don't really need to know who you're voting for or what they're planning to do...
Ah, Democracy in Action!
