Oh those Wacky Students

And the zany hamster-posting pranks they get up to...

http://education.guardian.co.uk/students/news/story/0,12891,1688415,00.html

Bizarre story. And possibly more disturbing because they're at Cambridge and, you'd *think* have at least some intellegence but with quotes like this, it appears not -

When asked why he gave a false name and address when purchasing the hamster, Jordan said: "Because I thought it would be a bit suspicious posting a hamster if I got caught."

Yes. Just a bit.

EDIT - according to the BBC they got fined and banned from owning animals for 10 years.
Personally I think this is going completely the wrong way. They should have been sent to work at a vets or animal shelter so they could see first hand what happens when people mistreat animals and hopefully learn a bit of empathy and feeling for something other than their over-priviledged selves.

Oh. And given a hefty kick up the arse too.

There are plenty of people at Cambridge who are exam-passing machines, but who don't actually have any brains.

"I do not think it crossed my mind that it was morally wrong."

That would explain the politics of most cambridge students I've met, then. Also, woo! I get to use this icon.

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
That was a real jaw-dropping statement.
Are these brats being give NO moral guidance as they grow up? Are they really all just spoilt self-centred dimwits growing up in a vacuum where they are the only thing of any importance?

Bring Back the Birch! (See, it makes me come over all Letter To the Times).

Incredibly cute icon tho ;)

[identity profile] dasquian.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Holy moly, I thought they'd have at least used a tupperware container so it was internally secure, rather than a flimsy envelope :(

Or, you know, not even thought about doing it in the first place.

[identity profile] dasquian.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so you'd need airholes. And by that point you have a parcel with obvious holes and scritchy noises coming from it, and ensuring the hamster's "safety" (forgetting for a moment that you're entrusting it to Royal Mail and then some guy you'll piss off with said hamster) is so elaborate that you couldn't anonymously post it like these students wanted to; you'd have to take it to a post office and get funny looks.

[identity profile] dreammonkey.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's a really horrible story! I used to work with some guy that used to charm people with stories of hamster tennis and didn't understand why I started a sweary tirade at him. B*stard.

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
It kind of puts our little antics into perspective, doesn't it.
What Happens to the Brain of the Student? (And I'm including my younger self in this)

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly the sudden release from Home and School and Adult Supervision makes them all (us included) go a bit over the top.
And no we weren't exactly saints by any means. But we did generally know stealing signs (etc) was a Bad Thing and there's a bit of a difference between sticking eggs and ham to the geology building [1] and shoving a hamster in the post.

[1] It seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

Bastard RUC PSNI fascists! Typical broken promises and political policing at its WORST.

And they expect you to join the Policing Board! I don't THINK so!
How'se the beard these days Gerry (sorry got a bit confused there)

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Dear gods woman, don't you read Dr Seuss??

Green eggs and ham!

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2006-01-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
But I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not LIKE them, Sam-I-Am. :(

[identity profile] adelpha.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
The eggs, and ham.
Were they green eggs and ham?
The vase and cone
I might have known,
But the eggs and ham,
Unsure I am.

[identity profile] glassstrider.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, they deserve to die. They acted knowing they'd kill the hamster just for fun.

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's the part where it didn't occur to them that it was wrong that worries me the most.

[identity profile] adelpha.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hamish Ross, chairman of the bench, said the court believed the incident had been premeditated.

They try to buy a hamster, and are refused because they're drunk. They go back again sober, and get one.

Yep, sounds premeditated to me.

Fuckwits. I just hope any future employers search for their names in Google and find these articles.

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness, if every future employee searched for all our names and aliases on Google before employing... *gulps*

Actually, so far as I know, the only occurrence of "Hannah Kilpatrick" that applies to me is a translation of "the marriage of figaro" into English which I submitted to the Aria Database, so it could be worse...

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankfully this is where having a ridiculously common name comes in handy ;)

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
But seeing as your user ID means songTHRUSH....!!

oh no! bearer of fungi!

ok ok it's a bit tangential but....

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
ye-es... yes, I can see that...
*peers*

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:34 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
the eggs

the ham

Oh F888k what's going on here! Yet again I have inadvertently sent an email that was intended for someone else to LJ! There's something going on here. PS Adelpha you will get an utterly irrelevant email thing soon, sorry argh

the ham
was calm
and slept all day

[identity profile] adelpha.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrm.. It wasn't the one offering a new logo, bigger breasts, a bigger erection, or a bigger orgasm, was it?

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2006-01-20 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
You can buy bigger orgasms now?

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2006-01-20 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
none of the above.
it offered pasta.
(actually can't remember what was in it)

[identity profile] adelpha.livejournal.com 2006-01-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, pasta...
