Yep, more horse stuff, sorry. It's about all I do these days so it's that or more moaning about avoiding work on the tenders. Which is pretty much what this is.

Took Ziggy out for a hack this morning, there's lots of pretty quiet wee country roads around us so its usually good to potter around on. She is very good with traffic, and when with another horse, very little bothers her at all. When on her own however, she gets a bit SUPER VIGILANT and things that she'd normally never look twice at suddenly become Horse Eating Monsters.

Today, the world was full of them.

First part of the hack is down the main road. Lorries, vans, cars whizzing past. All fine.

A sign outside new houses (that she has passed several times with no problem) - HORSE EATING MONSTER GET AWAY FROM IT QUICK

Grates/manhole covers - traps for the unuwary horse. To be avoided at ALL COSTS

Bins - suspicious, keep a close eye on them

Bin lorry - huge, clanking, bin eating monster. Obviously a friend to horses therefore and absolutely nothing to worry about

Sheep moving in a field - OMGOMG! WHAT IS IT? DOES IT WANT TO EAT ME?? RUN AWAAAAY!

A roll of fencing wire EVIL EVIL EVIL! HELP HELP! Quick get to the other side of the road don'tmakemegonearit!!

Flags (from the 12th) waving from every lamp post thro small village - no problem

Lorry with rattly trailer - fine

Cyclist whizzing past down hill - fine

Dog barking from behind a fence AAARRRGHHH (a full four feet off the ground spook at that one)

Cows - possibly monsters. Keep a VERY WATCHFUL EYE on them

Red Hedge cutting sign on road - EVIL!

Blue line painted on road - REALLY EVIL! HELP! DON'T STAND ON IT!!

Hedge cutting machine - AAARGGH MONSTER RUN AWAAAAAAY (to be fair it was behind the hedge so she couldn't really see it, just the big arm thing making really strange noises)

Red post office van - meh, fine

Bit of newspaper on side of road - GOING TO EAT ME! HELP!

Dog in middle of road barking - wary, but fine (then it ran away)

Dogs behind fences barking - RUN AWAAAAAAY

Wall painted blue on top - possibly EVIL! Beware!

Stone lions on gateposts - fine

Stone lions on ground - EVIL WAITING TO POUNCE! Do Not Approach!!

A single leaf lying on the ground - DANGER! KEEP AWAY!

We did make it back fine, despite it being a more eventful ride than usual. And she was very brave going past the scary hedge cutting machine. Some of the rest of it tho... why the SHEEP? And blue things. Blue things BAD in Ziggyland. Unless they are bin lorries. Bin lorries FRIEND.

Still, it gets me out in the fresh air ;p

ARRGGGH I FORGOT ABOUT THE ROSE OF TRALEE!!! Why is the world thwarting me so??

I thought it started tonight, but it was last night, so I have missed a whole night of Lovely Girls. Woe

Tho heh. Currently on the German rose, who is called Saoirse, and appears to be from Cork...

watch along here - http://www.rte.ie/player/

hahaha she is singing a German song, and all the other Roses are doing a Dance to go with it...

And now New York, Caitlin. Who is actually American. And doesn't like public displays of affection, so the host (who is he? where is Ray Darcy??) is creeping her out by trying to hold her hand.

OOh ooh she's going to dance!! Hurrah! And a slip jig at that! Off come the heels, and she's even hoiking the dress up, excellent form New York!

Dublin Rose... who is a hip hop dancer?? Dress is quite tight tho, so may not get much dancin' from this one. Also first newbridge necklace to go on the WANT list ;p she's getting the Irish in there too

Ahh she's changing her dress to dance. Host offering to go backstage and 'help'. The creep factor is high with this one
And off she goes! she doesn't seem to have changed so much as tucked the dress up into her knickers at the sides ;p She looks ... mental tho.

Bah break for the news. Raging I missed last night. The world thwarts me at every turn today. Good thing I have cider! Oh wait, can catch up last night's online while news is on. Some of it anyway
http://www.rte.ie/player/#!v=1109216

last night's Lovely Girls! )

Kerry! Much cheering and lots of Irish. AND a primary school teacher, always a bonus. Was apparently taught in school by the host. Which is a bit weird. No talent either

Sydney ooh with pictures of her as a young irish dancer, which is hopeful. Very Morticia adams dress tho. WOW. Throwing in a dead uncle too. Sneaky. She LOVES CHILDREN. A self choregraphed dance to aboriginal music she wrote herself. this shoudl be good!

skirt up, Jig shoes on but... not remotely in time to the music. Innovative!

New Zealand. who is from Dublin. And looks like she wandered in from a goth prom. With long drawn out stories about how she used to come down to watch the festival as a child. I suspect no talent for this one. SAD TALES of earthquake. She is getting a LOOOOONG interview. A long DULL interview.

thank GOD she's done

Wexford! She is very very pink, and black. and another Primary School Teacher! No necklace but v. pretty sparkly hairclip thing *takes note* She has a hole in her leg. Ooh ooh and a POME!! first pome so far I think. Aww written by her dad as a Young Man. bound to be points for that

Only 4 more to go...

Dubai rose! Dubai?? I don't think Grainne is a native of Dubai ;p and a special . needs teacher, which I think trump primary school. Ah donegal originally! Tho looks a lot like a Corr. Who's actually had a meal or two in the last year. Lovely blue dress too. No talent but a lovely story of rubbing the perth rose's leg in the middle of the night...

Roscomman! (nearly there) very sparkly dress. VERY sparkly. wants to be a doctor. Comes out with a story about how her da once dragged up and won a beauty contest. The da is NOT HAPPY ;p GLARING away and she says 'this is the best moment of my life!' Excellent!
Singing! oh, Valerie? WTF? THIS ISN'T AN IRISH DIRGE!! What is she thinking??? OUch ouch she's had a few too late nights, the voice is definitely going. Poor Roisin.

Queensland (2nd last. hang on in there!) Ooh the bookies favourite. Starts by looking at the crowd and going 'jesus!' good start ;p 2ndry school teacher. Not as good as primary. but, half filipino (and very pretty),asked to speak some and says 'I love hake'... Going to sing. Meh need more dancing!!

LAST ONE

Chicago, in a slinky dress, but telling a dull story. Yay escorts! must go back and watch escort of the year later, much more interesting than dull chicago
No dancing.

And it's OVER. BUT WHO WILL WIN??
More cider while we wait...

Imelda May for the Entertainment, which is nice. ANd last year's rose to do the HAND OVER of the crown

and it really is a CROWN

and there they all are on stage, doing the Lovely Girl Wave at the audience

The man with the results! Dragging it out as much as possible...

Thanking everybody IN THE WORLD

...

...

'We've almost 100 local sponsors but I won't go through them all tonight'

...

GET ON WITH IT

...

JUST TELL US WHO WON FFS

Thanking last year's Rose, so we must be getting closer.

HAHAHAHH he rambled on forever then WALKED OFF with the envelope, they had to call him back ;p

Now going thro all the ROSES, tho not doing Ray's trick of getting their names right.

JUST TELL US FOR GODS SAKE

aaaaand it is...

*drum roll*

....

QUEENSLAND (the 2nd last one!) She didn't even dance!!! Tho, she is very pretty.

And now sung out by a bloke in an enormous stetso, while her Mum joins her on stage. Aww.

ANd the GLITTER CANNONS ARE GO

Thats it for this year

Morning all! Today, very excitingly, I am getting a new roof on the kitchen. So far we have discovered that the existing roof was quite a bit more fucked than it looked, with the thrilling
find of a large puddle of water having leaked in right above the electricity box! Which was nice.

Going to leave them to it shortly and go play with Ziggy and test out her fancy new shoes - she got used in a farrier's competition at the weekend which means she now has a lovely new set of handmade, made to measure shoes. For free!
It was fascinating to watch them work, making the shoes from scratch and fitting them on - and it never ceases to amaze me how the noise, the heat and the smoke don't bother the horses one bit - the same creatures who can be terrified by a plastic bag, or a white rock on the roadside...

Anyway, some photos!

New Shoes! )

and now I must be off to test out the shoes, and hopefully have a lovely new roof when I get back (even more hopefully it doesn't rain in the meantime...)

Over the last few days there has been a lot of utterly stupid/reactionary/knee jerk bollocks popping up all over fb/twitter and elsewhere. LJ & you lot on the other hand have been bastion of (relative) sanity, rational thought - asking how and why and in general not screaming for blood. Actually THINKING! Well Done!

Plus we could all do with a bit of Cheer and Good Thoughts, so meme, nabbed from Kake -

My friends (i.e. you) are great, and (like many great people) don't appreciate themselves half as much as they deserve. So please (a) leave a comment and I will tell you something I like about you, and/or (b) feel free to reply to someone else's comment to tell them something you like about them.

If you feel up to it, please copy this offer into your own journal and do the same for your own circle of friends — but if you don't feel up to it, then it is absolutely fine not to.

(also, I have another day of proof reading/writing method statements & implementation plans ahead and will desperately need some distraction ;p)
hellison: (hat)
Very glad to see friends in London safe today, let's hope it stays that way - last night was unbelievable.
I'm not going to even try to compare it to what happens here because it was totally different in character - here rioters are trying to get at *each other* or the police - there isn't looting or even the arson/property destruction here any more.

Also the police have adopted a controversial new tactic of containing them, letting them get on with it while they take photos then turning on the water cannon. Arrests are then made at their leisure a few weeks later, because apparently arrests at the time can 'antagonise them' and make things worse... I can in a way see logic in this but its still pretty WTF.

It does tho make Teresa May's statement this morning somewhat baffling -
The way we police in Britain is not with water cannon. The way we police in Britain is on the streets and with the communities.

er...

That's from LAST MONTH.

On a brighter note the #riotcleanup on twitter has gathered momentum amazingly quickly and together with endless tweets urging people to check on elderly/disabled neighbours is truly inspirational and hopefully a sign that you won't end up like here, where riots are just a regular part of life that people shrug and get on with.
hellison: (trogdor)
Already posted this on FB & G+, so apologies to those of you now seeing it pop up for the 3rd time.

And I know, I know, online petitions. So VERY Effective. but this attitude just gives me teh RAGE and such idiocy should be highlighted and publicly mocked...

http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/supportfensheritage

Cllr Alan Melton, Leader of Fenland Council, Cambridgeshire, recently announced that from July 1st 2011, developers would no longer be required to observe the archaeological and heritage requirements of planning conditions. He went on to say,

"Any surveys “that are currently in the pipeline and that are not currently subject to litigation but are giving grief can be discarded - tomorrow morning.
“I don’t believe the Polar Bears will be floating down the Nene in my life time or indeed my children’s.”

Mr Melton described communities who resist growth as Nimbys and said the council’s message was: “No growth equals no investment”.

How y'all doing?
It's been a very lazy week here in Hellisonland, spent mostly either pottering about on the horse or pottering round the internet on the sofa. Highlight of the week was having drinks with brother & gf in the NEW HOUSE OMG where I showed him Muppet Bohemian Rhapsody , which made him laugh so much he had an asthma attack ;p A win for me I think!

Johnny Cash & Miss Piggy is probably still my favourite muppet moment tho, never fails to make me happy!

Hmm. Chances of me spending the whole afternoon watching the muppets again seem to be high. What's making you smile today?
hellison: (Default)
Lack of lj finds me here. But I have no real idea how to work Here or what do with it... which is about par for the course anyway!
hellison: (Default)
So I am soldiering on with the attic!

This morning, it looked like this -

The path along the Piles there is what I managed to clear yesterday

Here be Dragons )

And now!! TA DA!

One corner conquered and actual floor space revealed! Still have the other Much Stuff to get through, but it's a start. Better get back to it ...
hellison: (Default)
In an a fit of madness/boredom, and because of the ENDLESS RAIN this weekend, I have begun The Clearing of The Attic. This is mainly so that I have room for Sean Bean the Moving Of The Excess Stuff and Books from the living room can commence at some point in the future...

The secret bedroom/attic is Full Of Stuff. Mainly books. endless boxes and bags full of books. Often the SAME books. So far I have uncovered
3 Lord of the Rings,
3 Good Omens,
FOUR Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (3 single copies, one omnibus with the rest)
& divers duplicate Pratchetts and Heyers. Also many unread books - the newly dedicated To Read Shelf in the bedroom is now stacked nearly double, which I am now having to try really hard to ignore until the more clearing is done.

There are still manymany Bags of Stuff (mostly clothes destined for charity I think) and Boxes of Stuff and Books to go through, some of which have been there since I moved in. May take photos tomorrow to document the extent of the Stuff. I may have to be more ruthless with the throwing out/passing on too, something I have never been good at.

So, does anyone want a copy of Good Omens or H2G2? The LoTR are all staying because one is my childhood copy (no covers and probably a few pages of appendix missing from the back), one is a copy I was given as an 18th b'day present and the 3rd is one I picked up recently because it is the same as the childhood copy, only with covers and pages intact. This makes perfect sense to me, so stop judging ;p

I REALLY need to get better at getting rid of stuff (and books. Mostly books).

I ALSO found, amid boxes of old letters, cards and Important Things, many of which I can no longer remember what was Important about them in the first place, a bundle of Angsty Teen Pomes. Oh dear god. So full of No-one Understands Me and Woe and hormones. Thankfully, not all by me, some lovely work by one Ms Thesme too, including one seminal piece in which love seems to be a fish (& which is STILL better than my cringetastic efforts ;p). Naturally phoned her and recited this to her voicemail as a Special Treat.

So far have resisted temptation to give up clearing and spend hours reading old letters etc, but not sure how long this resolve will last.

Bonjour!

I breakfasted out on the patio in the sunshine this morn, so am feeling tres continental! It's lovely out there, have even Gardened! Tho have now retreated indoors cos it did get very warm.

So far, contrary to my expectations, this not working thing is, well, great! I have TIME!! To do STUFF! I can go hang out with friends, sort the horse, visit family and still have lots of time to just chill out at home, having lie-ins, pottering round the garden and having vague fits of clearing stuff up. It does get a bit dull in the evenings but a combination of gtalk chats and alcohol can help with that ;p

I also went to pony camp! It was great fun, lessons were tough and while I did great while I was there, somehow when I got back home and tried jumping again, it all just isn't working. Something in my head is refusing to let go of the fear... Ah well. May try for a few more lessons and stick to riding that doesn't involve jumping for a while and see how it goes.

No sign yet of ads for our jobs being out (despite 'assurances' that they'd be 'ready soon' over 2 months ago...), have applied and been accepted on to this MSC course in GIS stuff which starts in sept., so am just going to aim for that and see what happens in the mean time.

That's about it really. Ooh have joined the google + bandwagon, which so far seems to be fbook with lj friendlist style things. Tho one worrying thing is that the phone app seems to have uploaded all my photos automatically, which i am less keen on, but will have to poke about in the settings to work that one out. Probably have invites if there's anyone wanting one ;)
hellison: (lol!)
I can't decide what has brightened up a miserable grey morning more - this study http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jun/16/asterix-books-brain-injury on the brain injuries in the Asterix books, or the endless po-faced whinging in the comments!

This is my favourite so far because... it makes no sense at all

The British way of life is under threat from the petrol dollars and the religion that goes with it because the politicians and those in power are selling up. And all you can give us is this crap!

Cif seems to be increasingly heading into Have Your Say territory ;p

OOh ooh and its Lost in Showbiz day, so time for all the 'how dare the guardian trick me into reading about CELEBS where is the WAR and DEATH??' comments. Yay!
hellison: (drunk)
Must do a proper post later today, but as a brief aside, I had a Thesme to stay saturday night, and so, ART ;p

http://artpad.art.com/?lmq3cl3jodg

I really hope artpad is working again. That would bring so much JOY!

And an updated version by THESME. Fitting, as the original was to represent our NEW MATURE FRIENDSHIP MODEL and it ended up like this anyway...

How many times have I seen Serenity now and there's still one part I just can't watch...

If anyone needs me, I'll be in the kitchen, getting more cider
hellison: (at 40)
Chief of those today being NEVER EVER volunteer to babysit on Easter Sunday. Tho we did all survive and no chocolate was eaten from about 4pm onwards, which I felt was a win. And I think they may all finally be asleep! HURRAH!

Otherwise, Easter is going well! Work friday (boo!), tho escaped early (yay!), got horses sorted as quickly as possible then collapsed on sofa with migraleve. Yay also for codine!

Saturday - up early for morning hack. I think I was out of bed earlier than I usually would be for work ;p Had a lovely potter around back roads on the horses, home for lunchtime and spent then next couple of hours sat on the patio in the sun reading as virgin seem to have switched off the internet again . Back to move horses around about 3ish then off to shop for b'day presents for nephew and anything that might keep the other 2 amused and (preferably) quiet ;p
Took an odd notion to use up leftover soda bread flour from pancakes, so also went to lakeland and bought scales, a bread tin, yeast stuff and crumpet rings (possibly being over ambitious here, seeing as I have never baked a single thing successfully before). home via tesco for buttermilk etc and got in just in time for Dr Who!

May have to watch that again to catch everything, but a damn fine opener to the new series.

After Dr Who, internet was still off, so the BAKING commenced. Well, the covering of kitchen with flour... made a fruit soda dough & put that in the oven. Crumpet rings had a recipe for, well, crumpets, so made stuff for that. It was *supposed* to be batter, but ... Stuff is more appropriate. Then the quick yeast i got for the crumpets had a 'quick bread' recipe , so i figured, what the hell! and made that dough too. Shuffled around waiting for soda bread to cook and it was, miraculously, EDIBLE! I BAKED A THING THAT WAS EDIBLE!
Then remembered horses still out, went and got them in while soda bread cooled and other... stuff Rose, or whatever is is yeasty dough does.
Came back, put quick bread in oven, peered suspiciously at Crumpet Stuff. It *had* risen, but did not look like batter. Instructions said to 'pour into a jug' but this was definitely NOT pourable. More... stickable. very Very stickable. To everything. Still, nothing ventured, etc, so *tried* putting some in crumpet rings and seeing if it would cook, but alas, all i made were sort of half cooked doughy, lumpy biscuits. And the Stuff KEPT RISING.
So i made some pimms and ate the soda bread and non soda bread instead (also turned out edible! am still in shock). The Stuff still in the kitchen tho. I hope it doesn't eat one of the cats while i'm away...

Today, lie in, more reading (the Crimson Petal and the White), then down here to babysit. Afternoon spent chasing chocolate fuelled toddler round and round and round the garden, then marshalling all 3 for dinner at the mothers, then back to their own place to build lego and chase toddler round the garden some more (not as a game at this point, he got out while I was sorting lego and I genuinely couldn't catch him ;p). Finally however, some sort of lego star wars ship was assembled and all 3 packed off to bed.
So now, chocolate and more reading for me! and Two more days off work! hurrah!
happy easter ;)
hellison: (arse piglets)
ooh it is BACK. Typical when I have a day off it all dies. Admittedly a day off in which the morning was spent falling asleep in casualty and the afternoon supposedly resting and staying away from computers, but, you know...

So, it turns out, I have Post Concussion Syndrome. Which is pretty much like being concussed only it goes on for longer. Trip to casualty this morning was because I couldn't stay awake and felt generally ill, which Lovely Dr Irwin said to watch out for, so figured I should get checked out. After an hour or so of dozing off in the waiting room (a v. uncomfortable place) saw a v. friendly but v. busy doctor who did some basic checks, introduced me to the concept of PCS and said it'd wear off eventually, probably, and I should just take it easy.

Not sure quite where that leaves me re. time off work etc, but will see how it goes.

ION not much. Weekend was mostly horse and family, took the mother out shopping for the afternoon (and it may have been the 2 50 mile round trips and afternoon of pushing a wheelchair about that led to feeling so shite today, as I don't think that falls under 'taking it easy'), which was lovely and introduced her to the ipad, since we think she might find it easier to get online that way than the laptop. All she really wants to do is order groceries online and talk to the family in canada, and it should work for that. Just have to find out how they work with skype or similar and see...

And that is about it. have had lovely bath and am now abed trying to remember when I last took painkillers, will see how I feel come morning.

Also, really must start posting when NOT suffering from odd medical complaints ;p
hellison: (arse piglets)
So, after a phone consultation with Lovely Dr Irwin, today I have learned that the way to treat landing on one's head from a moving object is NOT to drink an entire bottle of champagne, then go drinking again the next day.

Turns out alcohol can both mask AND prolong the symptoms of concussion and that feeling dazed, headachy and generally out of it all last week and this was not so much due to the hangover - and he used to play rugby so I guess he knows what he's talking about ;p

So am back home (yay afternoon off) as I couldn't concentrate in work anyway, and under instructions to rest, NOT drink and go to casualty if I start throwing up. Yay!

At some point tho, I must document actual birthday funtimes, with added photos (including diamond white drinking, BLECH).

How you all doing?
hellison: (at 40)
I did start doing this last week then deleted it by accident half way thro ;p The time since has been occupied by birthday shenannigans and feeling v. groggy and rough which (after a week) turned out to be more due to yet again landing head first off the horse than the b'day shenannigans. Still, nothing vital damaged ;p

Anyway, more b'day funtimes details later, first, MEME, cos it is ages since I did one...

Rules?
1. People who have been tagged should write their answers in their blogs and replace any questions they dislike with a new, original questions of their own.

2. Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you. (is there ANYONE left who hasn't been tagged by this?)

meeeeeeemeeeeeee )

forgoing tagging as i haven't a clue anymore who has/hasn't done it already. Feel free to MEME if it takes your fancy!
hellison: (at 40)
It is, thanks to stupid clocks,4 am.I am abed, with laptop and for some reason drinking west coast cooler. I am not sure if this counts as final act of dissipation, or first act of outcastry... either way, today has been enormous fun. There has been cake and pimms and chocolate fingers and crisps and cider and more pimms and DIAMOND WHITE (aaaiieeee). sadly lacking in Thesme,being_here and thipe, but this will be remedied in times to come

I have a feeling most of tomorrow will be spent in bed. Probably going OW.

yay! Happy Extended Birthday to me!

ooh. and Happy (belated) birthday to Tyrell! The best is yet to come ;)
hellison: (Default)

Guess what path I took??

Have had a v. lovely day, lots of lovely messages from friends, ART from Thipe, a desk at work decorated with balloons, a beautiful bunch of flowers, cards, presents, pints and a whole lotta love really ;)

So now all that's needed to round the day off is (as unhurt puts it) a ponce inna nightie to read me POMES, and I assume he's waiting for me upstairs ;p
