WTF?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4514906.stm

The WTF moment being not so much the removal of the painting but the fact that the complaints, from *men* included "Some said the picture would upset women".

Not women complaining.
No, MEN complaining that Ladies would be Upset by a rather vague drawing of MALE FLESH.

OH NOES! Quick quick, I'm hyperventilating at the very THOUGHT, someone loosen my stays and fetch my smelling salts and embroidery! Call for my carriage, I must be taken home before my tiny mind (assuming I have one) collapses entirely!

Seriously, What The Fuck?
Have we slipped back a century or two and no-one told me? Who ARE these men? Why do they still exist? Are they on day release?

PS on an entirely unrelated note, I hope none of you Englanders are on fire or getting smoked out

I think they are from the same stable as the people who told us that Jerry Springer: The Opera was evil and demanded that it be banned for our own good ;)

The only argument I can see for censorship on behalf of others is when the material is liable to increase social instability or crime... a cartoon piccie of a bloke with his willy out hardly does that, you can find thousands of examples in secondary school workbooks around the world.

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
jerry springer practically is an opera already. all it lacks is the music.

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. The only I've seen mentioned in a pub lci publication, let alone had a whoel article on it, in which the naem of hte composer is not mentioend once. At all.

Can't be very good music. :)

We are not on fire! Although much of Greg's extended family lives in Hemel Hempstead (and all within 2.5 miles of the site), they are not on fire either, although for one of them, their loft hatch fell out of the ceiling (nb: not fell open, actually dropped out of the ceiling).

[identity profile] being-here.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I personally was very upset by this depiction of unclothed male.

I was so offended that I had to go and look at lots of other pictures with naked men in just to check my outrage levels were sufficiently high.

Honestly ;-)

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I didn't think of that (being so overcome at the time). Perhaps I should try this. After all, maybe I'm not being outraged/upset enough!
Where to find the naked men plz?

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
But he hasn't even got his willy out! There are no bits at all! I'm genuinely confused actually, I go to exhibitions and there are all types of bits all over the place....It sounds a bit Organised to me, could it be a hyperfundamentalist plot?

PS - Must tell the sister not to exhibit in England. She does men's bits in Xtra Thick Oil Paint - the men in question being her exes. When we went to one of her exhibitions all her dad could say was 'You know it's good when the penis follows you around the room'

He really did say that.

[identity profile] being-here.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of the ways you can tell if it's a good evening - the penis follows you around the room.

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the penis.
Or rather, waht's attached to the penis.
(technique, peopel!)

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
a huge chocolate bar? (attached to the penis, that is>>)

(PS Ceirseach sorry about ranting on your journal I just can't stop myself when it comes to THAT FILM - not harry potter)

[identity profile] whit-merule.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
You ranted on my journal? I hadn't noticed that yet. :)

(Yes, that line annoys me too, I have to say.)

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I guarantee you not as much as it annoys me.

Really.

ROFL I wondered if you'd spot that

Pervy dead relative fancier that you are :p

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
I do not fancy my dead relatives thank very much.

Alan Rickman is not a relative and he is not dead

Nyar.

I thought I'd gone off him anyway, but he's pretty hot in Harry Potter...

i need to know more about the hot gay cowboy movie... can you enlighten me?

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Brokeback mountain. We HAVE to go see then when I get home. Jake Gyllenhal and Heath Ledger being Hot Gay Cowboys!

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Do they indulge?

*pantpant*

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_unhurt_/ 2005-12-12 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
good lord, yes, we must! girly night out? hot gay cowboys + beer is probably up there with hot men in space (aka serenity) + beer. hurrah!

and back on topic... wtf? art galleries are full of naked lady parts! the whole story v. fishy - i lean towards the publicity notion.

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the sound of that! Sometime over christmas?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_unhurt_/ 2005-12-12 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
after, if you haven't been by then? i return to the Homeland over the holidays.

[identity profile] malvino.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
It might just be me being cynical, but is there actually any evidence at all that anyone complained, let alone 30 people?

If I was an art gallery that got 30 potential customers a day, trying to sell 'art' at £1200 a pop, in an expensive area of London, I just might have enough time on my hands to think up a way to get some free coverage, and possibly an impulse buy or two from the kind of person who will support anything that apparently outrages someone else, especially if there's censorship involved.

It might be co-incidence that this is also their first exhibition in their spanking new space, after having to move from Bond street... because they were ignored by everyone and had to downsize because couldn't afford the rent anymore.

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Never thought of it that way, but you could be right. Nothing like a censorship storm to drum up publicity and getting people to come see what they're not allowed to.

[identity profile] thesme-01.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm - the Bit plot thickens
Although feeling rather cheated since offending article exhibits NOTHING but ribbage! (And not red ribbed arousers either)

[identity profile] malvino.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's tempting to go down there with a thick marker and give him a huge stork-on, problem is they'd then be able to claim £1200 from the insurance and get even more publicity. Perhaps I should just go down late at night and draw a cock on the woman (well, on the glass in-front of it) they put in the window to replace mr. floppy.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_unhurt_/ 2005-12-12 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
i think you must. and now i'm thinking:

Hermaphroditic porn. Starlets with both organs. You should see the box, beautiful chicks with dicks that put mine to shame.

sorry. too many viewings of 'clerks'.

[identity profile] hellison.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd probably sell for more ;p
